“With All Due Respect To Rahul…” Harbhajan Singh Wants his Former Team-Mate To Coach T20I Side

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh thinks Indian team needs a new coach, specially in the shortest format of the game.

“In the T20 format you can have someone like Ashish Nehra who recently retired from the game. He knows this better than, with all due respect to Rahul, we have played together for so many years, he has vast knowledge but this is a tricky format,” Harbhajan told PTI.

Indian team has not been able to perform well in multination tournaments for quite some time now. They could not play up to their potential in Asia Cup 2022, which Sri Lanka won and then were kicked – out from the super 12 in the recently concluded T20i world cup 2022.

While speaking to PTI, veteran off-spinner Harbhajan stressed the need of different approach as for as the coaching is concerned in the shortest format of the game.

Harbhajan thinks Ashish Nehra who has a fair bit of coaching experience in this format can do a better job than Rahul Dravid. Nehra was first associated with RCB in the IPL as part of the coaching setup and then he helped Gujarat Titans lift the IPL 2022 trophy as a coach.

“Someone who has played the game more recently is better suited for the coaching job in T20s. I am not saying you remove Rahul from T20. Ashish and Rahul can work together to build this team for the 2024 World Cup,” Harbhajan added.

“With such an arrangement, it is easy for Rahul Dravid as well who can take a break as well like he did for the New Zealand tour and Ashish can do the job in his absence,” Harbhajan further said.

Rahul Dravid was given a break from the on going India vs New Zealand limited over series and VVS Laxman is taking care of coaching responsibilities in place of him. Captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have also been given the rest. Hardik Pandya led the side in the T20Is while Shikhar Dhawan will lead in the one-dayers.
